Psalm 78:1-7

We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord. Psalm 78:4

Many Christians want prayer in public school classrooms, sports events, and graduations. We want the Ten Commandments displayed in schoolrooms, courtrooms and other public buildings. We want Bible clubs for school kids. We like it when government officials quote Scripture or promote a national day of prayer.

Such things may be good, but let's look closer to home. About five percent of people in North America pray and read the Bible daily. Five percent--just one out of twenty! If Christians don't begin each day with Bible reading and prayer, why expect public schools to do so? If we don't memorize the Ten Commandments at home, why expect secular schools to display the Commandments? If churches rarely read the Ten Commandments during worship, why expect government courtrooms to value God's Law more than the church does? It is hypocrisy to demand that government institutions do what Christian homes and churches are failing to do.

Who is mainly responsible to cultivate faith in children? Parents--especially fathers (Ephesians 6:4). The Lord "commanded our forefathers to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God." Our commitment as parents must be, "We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord." Don't leave it to others.

PRAYER--Lord, deepen our daily fellowship with you. Revive our homes and churches with a desire to hear your Word and speak to you in prayer. Then transform society through us. Amen.
